# Choose a message template for WhatsApp API automation

> Select an approved WhatsApp message template and map its variables when you add a WhatsApp API automation step in bitCRM.

Use this page when you add a WhatsApp API or Coexistence message step to an automation.

## Overview

The current template flow is selection-first. In the step form, you choose a **Message template**, then map the template variables that the template requires.

If you do not have a template yet, the current selector includes **Create new template**.

## Before you start

* Open an automation scenario in [Automation](https://app.bitbybit.studio/bitcrm/automation-new).
* Add a trigger first.
* Make sure the WhatsApp channel you want to use is connected.

## Steps

1. Click the **+** button in the scenario.
2. Choose **Communication channel**.
3. Choose the WhatsApp channel you want to use.
4. Choose **Send a message**.
5. In **Message template**, select the approved template you want to use.
6. If the template includes parameters, map each one:
   * **Parameter**
   * **Variable**
7. Save the step.
8. Click **Save automation**.

## If you need a new template

If the template selector does not contain the template you need, use **Create new template** from the current **Message template** field.
