# Map variables in automation message templates

> Match template parameters to variables when a WhatsApp automation message step asks for parameter mapping in a supporting template workflow.

Use this page if you want to map template variables in a supporting automation message workflow.

## Overview

In the current message-template flow, a template can require parameter mapping after you select **Message template**.

The current parameter UI uses these labels:

* **Parameter**
* **Variable**

## Before you start

* Add a message step to the automation.
* Select the message template first.

## Steps

1. Review each **Parameter** shown in the template step.
2. Choose the matching **Variable** for that parameter.
3. Repeat the process for every required parameter.
4. Save the step.
